What is FSMA all about?
The FDA Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA) was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus of federal regulators from responding to contamination to preventing it.
It represents a radical development of food safety law in the US and will have wide reaching impacts. The law will bring in changes in how the FDA manages food safety in the areas of prevention, inspection and compliance, food imports and food defense.
One of the key changes arising from the Act is the requirement for 165,000 domestic and 254,000 foreign food businesses to have in place a certified food safety plan. This can be a significant challenge for many food businesses.
